Marie A. Brown till Zacharias Topelius 18.2.1883

Grand Hotel,
Stockholm Feb. 18th / 83.

Prof. Z. Topelius
Dear sir.

1 By the merest chance I happened to develop a plan to Mr. Bonnier yesterday, which seemed to please him very much, and which he thought might possibly do away with the difficulties. He asked me to put it on paper, in definite shape, for him and also to send you a copy, which I herewith do. He will himself write to you about it.

2 A plan for the adjustment of the lemma startgrievancekommentar with Jansen, McClurg & Co. in regard to the publication of oläsligt p.g.a. konservering/inbindningThe Surgeon’s Stories”:

3

1:st condition: The suppression of the 1st vol. “Gustaf Adolf”, as published by J. McC & Co., and its withdrawal from the market.
2:nd   “    The publication of a new edition of this series, “The Surgeon’s Stories”, with illustra||tions, and with the authorization by Prof. Topelius of Miss Brown’s translation of the same.
3:rd   “ This new edition to be printed in Stockholm, by Herr Albert Bonnier, on account of the illustrations, on account of the proof-reading, which should be done by Miss Brown, and to ensure perfect satisfaction to the author with the manner in which his works are brought out.
4:th   “ The books, when printed, to be forwarded unbound to J. McC & Co., as the American publishers, they to bind them and put their imprint upon them, together with Albert Bonnier’s.
5:th   “ Willingness on the part of J. Mc & Co, to co-operate with an English publisher in the publication and circulation of these books.
6:th   “ Miss Brown to go to London and use her utmost endeavor to secure such an English publisher as would ensure the success of the books in that country.||
7:th condition: Such a business arrangement in regard to terms, royalty, etc., as would be equitable and satisfactory to all concerned. The author, Prof. Z. Topelius, and the translator, Miss Marie A. Brown, to receive their due share of the profits, this is to consist in a royalty or honorarium on each and every copy sold of the six volumes, and to continue as long as the books are in circulation.
8:th   “ The mss. of the entire series, as translated by Miss Marie A. Brown, to be forwarded at once, as soon as the arrangement is concluded, to Herr Albert Bonnier, in Stockholm.

4 A similar arrangement to the above will be made with Mr. Hjalmar Linnström and Mr. Beijer, in the publication of Sveriges historia and “Fänrik Stål”, for both of their works would be printed here in Stockholm, and circulated in England and America.

5 Hoping this will commend itself to your judgment, I am

Yours very truly

Marie A. Brown.
